2005-08-22 On the way to Asia

German small to medium-sized companies also wish to benefit from the boom in Asia. However, those wishing to venture out into Asia should prepare thoroughly.

Andreas Zehmisch already knows Japan inside out. Even Korea and Hong Kong have long since ceased to be unknown territory for the Managing Board member of UES AG. The same is true of China, Taiwan, Malaysia - all countries in which the Krefeld company - one of the leading suppliers of adhesive technology here in Germany - is already represented. "Three years ago, we decided to follow our customers to the Far East, in order to optimise the just-in-time production", explains the 42 year-old manager. The customers are above all industrial companies from the packaging industry, as well as large companies, such as Daimler-Chrysler, Unilever and Procter & Gamble, which UES AG supplies with special machines for industrial adhesion systems.
Just like the Krefeld company, more and more small to medium-sized companies are venturing abroad. According to a survey of the Federal Association of German Industry, one in four companies with between 100 and 250 employees is already active in other countries. Roughly every fifth company is preparing to relocate business activities outside of Germany in the near future.
And many of these companies are inevitably being drawn towards Asia. No wonder: for many years, the Asian economies have been regarded as the locomotive of the world economy. Rapid growth, unstoppable technical progress - what enthusiastic entrepreneur would not like to be part of this?

Japan is very important

Whilst the People's Republic of China has been at the centre of public interest in recent years, the significance of the Japanese market for German companies is not to be underestimated. "With a per-capita gross domestic product (GDP) of 35,000 US Dollars, the purchasing power is particularly high", explains Bernd Schaaf, Head of the Asia/Pacific Section of the Federal Agency for Foreign Trade (bfai). By comparison: the Chinese population has a per-capita GDP of 1,200 US Dollars and that of the Indian sub-continent 600 US Dollars. "However, even the so-called small tigers, such as Thailand, Malaysia or Vietnam are becoming increasingly interesting for German investors", comments the Asia expert from Cologne. Nevertheless, entrepreneurs wishing to establish themselves in Far East markets should prepare themselves thoroughly before setting out on this venture.
"Tying yourself to a serious partner is enormously important."
In addition to bfai (www.bfai.de) and the responsible foreign trade chambers (www.dahk.de), the larger chambers of industry and commerce (www.dihk.de) also publish data on the individual markets and branches, on the respective competitive situation and on the legal, fiscal and bureaucratic hurdles. The latter have divided up responsibility for information from the individual countries amongst themselves. Thus, for example, the Chamber of Industry and Commerce Cologne is the contact body for companies wishing to become involved in China.
In addition, bfai expert Schaaf also recommends not relying too much on theoretical analyses. "The particular aspects of the individual markets, as well as the cultural contrasts, are best recognised on site", explains Schaaf. For example, with the help of entrepreneur trips as offered by the East Asia Association (www.oav.de) or by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Labour (www.bmwa.bund.de). Trade fairs and exhibitions also provide initial practical experience - both as visitor and as exhibitor on a joint stand of several German companies.

Local experts

As an initial step, it is by all means sufficient for a company to first of all build up its distribution with the help of local experts. This is the route taken by the adhesion technology specialists UEG AG. "However, when making a selection, it is enormously important to tie oneself to a serious, trustworthy partner", reports UES Managing Board member Zehmisch with a reference to personal experience. The Krefeld manager has already had to part company with his local salesmen twice, as the sales figures were not satisfactory. "The best results are achieved if you can draw on a reference from the Chamber of Industry and Commerce in Germany or from a network of businessmen", comments Zehmisch.
The company, with 30 employees, is now planning the next step in order to establish itself in the Asian markets. "Over the coming months, we shall be developing new production facilities in Shanghai", the UES Managing Board member explains. From there, we shall be able to supply customers in both China and Taiwan. Zehmisch, "When production gets underway, we shall initially send a German member of staff to Asia". This colleague will have the task of ensuring that the accustomed high quality standard is also achieved locally. "After all, our turnover in Asia should continue to increase by 20 percent per annum even in the future", explains the Krefeld entrepreneur.

2005-03-02 Service being expanded

In 2004, UES AG, a manufacturer of Nordson-compatible hot-glue systems, succeeded in almost doubling its turnover in the field of service and maintenance. Thanks to this positive trend, the company now wishes to further expand its “New Dimension “ service concept.
“For us, the rise in turnover is confirmation that our assessment of the requirement for customer-close service concepts is correct“, is the happy message from Andreas Zehmisch, Management Board member of UES. “With free trial maintenance, we shall offer every new user of hot-glue applications the opportunity of getting to know our services. The mobile workshop enables us to perform the service directly on the customer’s company premises.“
The company is placing its faith in long-term customer binding, and has anchored the quality of the service firmly in its corporate culture.

2005-03-01 Crunch matter: hot-glue installations

In line with family tradition, Schulte has been producing high-quality fine pastries and baked goods for 120 years with over 250 employees. The selection and testing of the ingredients is equally as important as the choice of the optimum machinery.
A small but important part of the production chain is the use of hot glue in fully-automated carton and box-closing machines. The components only come into the spotlight when they cease to function properly.
Following intensive discussions and comparisons, UES AG in Krefeld, for many years on the German market with hot-glue installations and their periphery from a single construction, was chosen as a partner for Schulte fine pastries. Decisive factors, amongst others, were the clever solutions to details, such as the Quick-Out-System that enables a change of the heating unit on an application head without switching off the machine. In this way, costly idle periods are reduced to an absolute minimum, the production rhythm is maintained. Losses that are unavoidable as a result of wear and tear, can be minimised through the use of quick-action couplings. The reliable supply of replacement parts, also through the setting up of a consignment stock in the own company, makes it possible to rectify almost all failures within the shortest of times. In addition, a service hotline and a service technician – who can provide a bridging device if necessary – are available.

2004-10-01 New-style seal prevents carry-over of adhesive

UES AG in Krefeld is following a new path in order to counter the carry-over of liquids occurring in hydraulics, and thus to prolong the life-span of application modules. Seals are usually exposed to unfavourable surroundings. For example, extreme conditions prevail in hot-glue technology applications, which standard seals were previously barely able to cope with. The use of conventional seals with particularly adhesive PU adhesives with very long molecular chains, or with abrasive adhesives, is particularly critical.
The composition and constituent substances favour the destruction of conventionally-used seals. In order to now counter the costs of replacement, the challenge was to achieve a many-fold increase in the durability of the molecules. Intensive tests with various adhesives with the most differing recipes, led to the development of the H800 module. In comparisons with standard modules, identical service lives were achieved as with the proven H300 standard module that processes “normal” adhesives.
The new module is equipped with a sealing system that is unique in adhesion technology: in a complicated procedure, a seal is vulcanised onto the piston rod. Piston rod and seal thus form a unit that does not allow any carry-over of the adhesive on the piston rod. This technology is made possible by the use of a special vulcanisation process, combined with high-precision production processes.

2004-07-01 New glue-application control system

UES AG, Krefeld, has launched two adhesive technology products onto the market:

The glue-application control system PCS 1000 is capable of detecting glue application on all commonplace base surfaces at speeds of up to 150 m/min. The laser sensor guarantees the checking of the application, the control assumes the processing of the signals. This system, developed especially for the packing market, is equipped with a two-channel controller in the standard version; as an option, the product can also be supplied with a four-channel controller.

Series H 340 air-closing modules and the corresponding application heads, promise to solve the problem of threading with adhesives, thanks to the speed and precision of the closing procedure that are in the range of 6 ms. The corresponding single and multi-module application heads are connection-compatible to Series H440 application heads from Nordson, and can also be used as replacement parts for these.

2004-06-01 Partner in Italy

With effect from 15th April 2004, UES AG, a supplier of hot-glue installations and components, has taken a further step towards establishing an international presence. A contract for the sale of UES installations and components in Italy has been concluded with the Milan-based company E.O.I. TECNE. Both parties expect this collaboration to lead to a considerable improvement of their market presence.
“In particular the North of Italy, with its diverse industrial base, requires professional representation and competent advising on site. In E.O.I. TECNE, we have found a partner with many years of experience of the market and in application technology. Until now, E.O.I. TECNE has serviced the markets as a supplier of cold-glue and viscous media, and has positioned itself very well. We shall now exploit these synergy effects together and benefit from them”, explains Andreas Zehmisch, Management Board member of UES AG.
As a provider of installations and components that are connection-compatible to the systems of other manufacturers, UES has made a name for itself in recent years in the European market for hot-glue technology. Further branches are planned throughout Europe. By the end of 2004, UES is striving for comprehensive cover in all countries of the enlarged EU.

2004-05-01 UES now with increased customer-proximity

Within the context of its “New Dimension“ strategy, UES AG in Krefeld has considerably expanded its service and distribution network in Germany with effect from 1st April. Munich, Aschaffenburg, Gross-Gerau, Hamburg and Leipzig are the new service locations of UES AG.
From here, the locally-based customers will in future be supplied not only with replacement parts; repairs and maintenance will also be controlled decentrally from these locations. These services are available for all UES products, as well as for the correspondingly connection-compatible installations of Nordson and other manufacturers. “In emergencies and with maintenance, speed is trumps. When a machine is standing idle, the customer has only one wish: the installation must again be rendered capable of producing. For this reason, we have selected the partner companies in a targeted manner based on the considerations of emergency availability and service mentality“, explains Bernd Friedewald, responsible for the development of the partner network at UES AG. We are currently holding discussions with additional potential partner companies in Berlin, Stuttgart and Freiburg. These areas should be incorporated into the service network during the course of 2004. By the end of the year, we shall have built up a closely-meshed network throughout Germany.

2003-11-01 Contract with major Group

UES AG is very pleased with the results of the Fachpack 2003 in Nuremberg. At this specialist exhibition, the manufacturer of adhesive technology products fired the starting pistol for the future service and product strategy. “We have met with a very positive reaction. Across the board, visitors confirmed that, in particular our comprehensive and well-rounded-off service concept, distinguishes itself clearly from the current market standard, and is recognised as a new dimension”, is the comment of Sales Manager Wilhelm Steffens.
After all, during the exhibition, the company succeeded in concluding a comprehensive service and maintenance contract with a renowned German Group, which also includes exclusivity in the new installation business. “The launch of “New Dimensions” is an important milestone for the future of UES, and Fachpack offered an appropriate framework for this. We had a good location and were able to hold a number of future-oriented discussions with customers and interested parties”, is the happy message from Management Board member Andreas Zehmisch.
